Jesus Came to Make the Father Known: A Christmas Eve Sermon

This is one in a series of Advent sermons. The series is entitled Why Did Jesus Come? Tonight we answer the question of why Jesus came by considering what we are told in the prologue of John’s Gospel. 1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was in the beginning with God. 3 All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made. 4 In him was life, and the life was the light of men. 5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it… 14 And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth… 16 And from his fullness we have all received, grace upon grace. 17 For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. 18 No one has ever seen God; the only God, who is at the Father’s side, he has made him known (John 1:1-5, 14, 16-18).
